Rui Vinagre has initiated the study of Portuguese Guitar in Coimbra in 1996, in the section of Fado from the Academic Association of Coimbra, and later in the “Escola da Guitarra, da Viola e do Fado de Coimbra” (School of Portuguese Guitar, Classical Guitar and Fado from Coimbra). In 1998 he creates the project “Despertar” (Awake), composed essentially by a repertoire of the master of Portuguese Guitar, Carlos Paredes. At the same time he worries about playing the Portuguese Guitar with the correct existing techniques, through the performing of the traditional repertoire composed for this instrument, he also dedicates himself to the composition and exploration of the instrument in the scope of new and original paths for the instrument and for its performing techniques. From jazz to Portuguese traditional music, Rui Vinagre operates alchemy, transforming the way we listen to the Portuguese Guitar. The influence of the undisputed master of the instrument, Carlos Paredes, is there, as are some unexpected associations. When he performs the Portuguese Guitar, this musician discloses an unique instrument from a culture that is in permanent expansion throughout the world, integrating it in several genres and styles that include Portuguese traditional music, classical music, jazz, dance music, promoting the fusion of styles in which these instrument’s sound, usually associated to “fado”, integrates in an unique way. In 2002, Rui Vinagre initiates the project TRILHOS – “Os novos trilhos da Guitarra Portuguesa” (PATHS – “The new paths of the Portuguese Guitar”. Mainly used as a solo instrument or as company for voice and classic guitar, the Portuguese guitar has no history of consistent experimenting with more complex combos. The Trilhos project makes the Portuguese guitar lose its shyness and start engaging in more gregarious music. He joined Miguel Calhaz (double-bass), Marco Figueiredo (piano) and Joaquim Teles – Quiné (percussion) in this quartet that opens new horizons to this instrument that finally starts to liberate itself from the sometimes stifling status of national symbol. He usually performs in public solo, in duets, trios and quartets, cooperating occasionally with several initiatives in the cultural and social scope, and sometimes is possible to see him in public as an invited musician in several musical projects of different origins.Since 2009 he is teaching Portuguese Guitar at the School of Arts in Sines. He continues to study composition and jazz music at the same school.Rui Vinagre plays with guitars made by Fernando Meireles Pinto with the tuning of Coimbra.
