Kalia sings and plays Nay, working with music of the Mediterranean and Middle East. She has a degree in Ethnomusicology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London as well as a Masters in Ethnochoreology. Kalia specialises in traditional Greek song, such as from the island of Crete where she is from. She has also studied various vocal traditions such as Arabic (Abdul-Salam Kheir, Anouar Abu-Dragh, Ehsan Emam), Hungarian (Marta Sebestyen) and Afghan (Hussein Arman). Origianally trained on the classical flute with a Diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, she then picked up the Nay (Arabic flute) which she studied with Louai Alhenawi and Mohammad Antar. Currently she works as a teacher and performer between Greece and London, including work at the Barbican Centre and with Music in Hospitals. Kalia is also a radio presenter for the London Greek Radio, where she host a weekly show on Greek traditional music.
