Rui Vinagre has initiated the study of Portuguese Guitar in Coimbra in 1996, in the section of Fado from the Academic Association of Coimbra, and later in the “Escola da Guitarra, da Viola e do Fado de Coimbra” (School of Portuguese Guitar, Classical Guitar and Fado from Coimbra). In 1998 he creates the project “Despertar” (Awake), composed essentially by a repertoire of the master of Portuguese Guitar, Carlos Paredes. At the same time he worries about playing the Portuguese Guitar with the correct existing techniques, through the performing of the traditional repertoire composed for this instrument, he also dedicates himself to the composition and exploration of the instrument in the scope of new and original paths for the instrument and for its performing techniques. From jazz to Portuguese traditional music, Rui Vinagre operates alchemy, transforming the way we listen to the Portuguese Guitar. The influence of the undisputed master of the instrument, Carlos Paredes, is there, as are some unexpected associations. When he performs the Portuguese Guitar, this musician discloses an unique instrument from a culture that is in permanent expansion throughout the world, integrating it in several genres and styles that include Portuguese traditional music, classical music, jazz, dance music, promoting the fusion of styles in which these instrument’s sound, usually associated to “fado”, integrates in an unique way. In 2002, Rui Vinagre initiates the project TRILHOS – “Os novos trilhos da Guitarra Portuguesa” (PATHS – “The new paths of the Portuguese Guitar”. Mainly used as a solo instrument or as company for voice and classic guitar, the Portuguese guitar has no history of consistent experimenting with more complex combos. The Trilhos project makes the Portuguese guitar lose its shyness and start engaging in more gregarious music. He joined Miguel Calhaz (double-bass), Marco Figueiredo (piano) and Joaquim Teles – Quiné (percussion) in this quartet that opens new horizons to this instrument that finally starts to liberate itself from the sometimes stifling status of national symbol. He usually performs in public solo, in duets, trios and quartets, cooperating occasionally with several initiatives in the cultural and social scope, and sometimes is possible to see him in public as an invited musician in several musical projects of different origins.Since 2009 he is teaching Portuguese Guitar at the School of Arts in Sines. He continues to study composition and jazz music at the same school.Rui Vinagre plays with guitars made by Fernando Meireles Pinto with the tuning of Coimbra.

Born in the town of Ejea de los Caballeros, Zaragoza, Fernando’s interest in music begun at the age of seven. His first contact with classical music was throughout the conservatory of Spain. After these came numerous private instructors and music centers such as ’L’Aula de Musica’ in Barcelona, ‘Escuela de Musica Creativa’ in Madrid, ‘Musicians Institute’ in Hollywood, California, Maharaja Sawai Mansingh Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Jaipur,India and Arabic Conservatoire du Musique d’Alexandria, Egypt. In these centers he studied traditional, classical and contemporary music styles, as well as harmony, composition, arrangements, orchestration, sound engineering, and other special courses such as Film Scoring, Ethnic music, etc. But his interest took him to learn more directly from artists and their cultures, traveling to different places to not only learn but to experience the spirit of the different musical styles. Nowadays you can realize this experience throughout the talent of this artist who has performed with artists from such exotic places as Hawai’i, Cuba, Jamaica, West Africa, Japan, South, Central and North America, Spain, France, Ireland, India, Egypt, etc. The guitar has always been his passion, an instrument which he explores in its many forms, starting by the spanish classical guitar, acoustic, electric, Dobros or resophonic guitars and continuing with other interesting ones such as african, hawaiian ki Ho'alu (Slack Key) and Kika Kila (Steel Guitar), the ‘slide’ style from Mississippi, Flamenco, or even the curious way of playing guitar in hindustani music found in India. He also explores new horizons reflected throughout his arrangements and compositions based on instruments of different cultures; examples are the japanese Koto, chinese Pipa, or african Ngoni and Kora. In his performances Fernando has been a musical ambassador supported by the Embassy of Spain and Cervantes Institute representing the music of his native Spain. He has collaborated with artists such as Shye Bent-Zur (Middle East-India), grammy winner Fathy Salama (Jazz/Arabic, Egypt) or his work with George Kahumoku (Hawaiian) in a Grammy Winning concert series called “Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key”. He has several published works representing the music of the major cultures in our planet performed on guitar and has presented them in renowned Theaters, Opera Houses as well as International Music Festivals in the five continents. Examples are: EarthSync Festival, India, Universal Expo 2009, Spain, Mediterranean Countries Dialogue Night, Egypt, Festival of Sufi Music 2009, El Cairo, Roxy Theater, Hollywood, U.S.A. Following two successful events in 2007 and 2009 the third edition of the EuroMed Music Festival will take place - with the support of the European Union Culture Programme 2007-2013 - from the 3rd to the 13th of June 2010 in three cities in East and Central Europe: Budapest (Hungary), Belgrade (Serbia) and Katowice (Poland). This year the program was selected to become part of the UNESCO International Year of Rapprochement of Cultures 2010 program series. The Festival wishes to respond to current social problems, when gaps continue to exist between civilizations and cultures, when the individuals have to face with a society that becomes more and more multicultural. The musicians – whose origins roots back to twelve different countries and cultures – will spend 5 days in Budapest sharing their experiences in a variety of traditional and modern musical genres. They are supposed to use Arab, Jewish, African, Balkan and jazz music elements for the creation of nine new world music products that will be first staged during the three-day festivals closely following each other in the three cities. In Budapest the centrally located popular place, the Gödör Klub’s open air terrace will give the space for the debut performances. This year, beside nine Hungarian musicians taking part in the event, Tunisia, Egypt, Italy, Turkey, Israel, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Portugal, Serbia and Poland will also be represented. What can be the fruit of the meeting of professional musicians coming from different corners of the globe and how they can manage to build bridges through music and reach the audience attention? Forty-five venturesome artists with a vast international experience will look for the answer during the event and will do their best to open their ears and mind to understand each other and create a unique sound of fusion of traditional and modern music elements. The organizers who attempt the third time to create nine collaborations gave the opportunity for young talented musicians and artists who already past rich years in the professional scene and reached high reputation in smaller or wider scale. The audience will be the first to listen to the meeting of – just to name a few - the African-bluesy unique voice of the Belgian Minata Traoré with the Tunisian young oriental violin player Youssef Haj , the meeting of the world wide famous Portuguese Rão Kyao and the Turkish Oud player, Mehmet Polat who might find bridges between Far-East, Turkish and Fado musical heritage, or the creation between the virtuoso Israeli Oud player Sameer Makhul and well-known Serbian bass player Vasilic Nenad and Hungarian percussionist Kornél Horváth. You can also listen to the songs of modern flamenco singer Paloma Povedano accompanied by Tunisian Quanun player Daly Triki , or the promising young talent pianist Omri Mor, the Middle Eastern percussionists Yinon Muallem and Ayman Mabrouk, the Belgian saxophonist Manuel Hermia, the Serbian vocalist Bojana Nikolic, the Hungarian multi-instrumentalist Béla Ágoston or the Egyptian Mohammed Antar who plays various types of Ney. The endless list can be continued with full of great artists of the surrounding area. The artistic production will result from a collective creation, thus supporting new European identities, cultural pluralism and enforcing mutual enrichment of contemporary creations between Europe and its Mediterranean neighbors. The aim of the festival is also to show how music can be a mediating tool between cultures, and how a point can be reached where the different cultures join, creating new, universal values. The event was first held in 2007 in Budapest for the initiative of the Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism and with the support of the Anna Lindh Foundation. Organiser : Hungarian Museum of Trade and TourismCo-organizers: Multikultivator servis za razvoj kulture i umetnosti (Belgrade, Serbia) Ars Cameralis Silesiae Superioris (Katowice, Poland) Dates: Budapest - June 8-10, 2010 Belgrade – June 9-11, 2010 Katowice – June 11-13, 2010
